The Chinese Australian creative and consultant has established herself as a leading digital influencer, and been named editor-in-chief of Vogue China

Margaret Zhang

While Margaret Zhang began her career in fashion as a blogger —founding Shine By Three in 2009 — she has since transitioned into other fields, establishing herself as a photographer, stylist, writer, creative director, and consultant. In February 2021, she was named Vogue China's editor-in-chief, marking the Condé Nast title's first appointment from outside the traditional media world. Throughout her rise in the fashion industry, the young creative has worked with a number of global brands including Gucci, Dior, Uniqlo, Louis Vuitton and Lexus.

Zhang’s early interest in fashion saw her begin her blog at the age of 16. While attending the University of Sydney, Zhang arranged to attend her first fashion week in New York with financial support from the business school. Zhang has since obtained both a Bachelor of Commerce and a Bachelor of Laws.

In 2014, she teamed up with Matchesfashion as a guest buyer during New York Fashion Week. In 2015, she also served as one of Clinique’s global faces for the company’s #FaceForward campaign. Her photography, styling, and creative direction has been employed by the likes of L’Officiel, Harper’s Bazaar, Nylon, Marie Claire, Buro24/7 and Elle.

With nearly a million followers on Instagram and half a million unique visitors per month on Shine By Three, Zhang is one of fashion week’s most recognisable faces, regularly attending high-profile shows like Balenciaga, Gucci, and Louis Vuitton. In 2015, Margaret Zhang won the Elle Digital Influencer of the Year award. In 2016, she was inducted to Forbes's 30 under 30 Asia list, as well as TimeOut’s 40 Under 40.

While her profile as an influencer and model has grown over the years — she is a street style regular and has appeared in brand campaigns for Clinique and Pandora and on the covers of Elle, Rouge Fashion Book and Nylon — she is also frequently found behind the camera as a photographer and filmmaker, working on projects for a range of brands including Tory Burch and Chanel. She has advised brands on strategy, with a particular focus on those entering or expanding within the Chinese market.
